Wow: over 200 of you have already told us why you hate or love your jobs. We were particularly struck (although unfortunately not surprised) by this comment from Patrick, a retail worker at ‘Wally World.’
I work for Wally World and I have to struggle to get something done in my department, mainly because I have to be the cashier, carryout artist, and make sure everybody in 5 different departments get customer service. It will only get worse as spring is coming and I work in Lawn and Garden. Which means I will have to try to get things that are stored outside for customers. Management is just saying cover it all and will rarely get enough people scheduled to cover all the departments properly.
While we don’t know for sure where Patrick works, if he does in fact work for WalMart, he’s not alone in job dissatisfaction. As WakeUpWalMart points out, “associates” employed by the retail giant often earn poverty wages, have no health care, and get injured on the job. There are 76 class action lawsuits alleging wage-and-hour violations at WalMart. And of course, WalMart is notoriously anti-union, squelching worker efforts to get a real voice on the job.
That’s why we need to stand up and tell Congress: fix our labor laws now!
