Were you ever bullied at school? Ever get your lunch money stolen? I bet you thought that behavior would stop once you grew up.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case when you’re a worker trying to form a union. Here’s a statistic that’ll get your blood boiling: 78 percent of workers are forced to attend closed-door meetings with management during union organizing drives. And how much can employers be fined by the National Labor Relations Board for illegally threatening, intimidating, or firing their workers? A whopping zero dollars and zero cents.

Why do our jobs suck? Because when workers try to form unions to improve their workplaces, unscrupulous companies harass and intimidate their employees. And even if corporations get caught breaking the law, they get off with a slap on the wrist – and break the law all over again. It happened to Randall:
Our Casino got in trouble for Violating the National Labor Relations ACT!…All they had to do was post a letter that said they were sorry and that they would not do it again – they already did.
Unfortunately, telling a company to post an “I’m sorry” note is about all the National Labor Relations Board can do. (more…)

Insults. Injury. Intimidation. An impossible workload. That’s happened at the FedEx Ground terminal in Wilmington, MA, according to four Arab-American drivers who allege that they were the victims of racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination – and that senior company management failed to respond to their multiple complaints.

Wow: over 200 of you have already told us why you hate or love your jobs. We were particularly struck (although unfortunately not surprised) by this comment from Patrick, a retail worker at ‘Wally World.’
I work for Wally World and I have to struggle to get something done in my department, mainly because I have to be the cashier, carryout artist, and make sure everybody in 5 different departments get customer service. (more…)
